Why Did We Grow So Far Apart? A Conversation for Parents of Adult Children

  • The Art of Becoming Collective 523 Remington St, Suite A Fort Collins United States (map)

Somewhere along the way, your grown kid started seeing the world differently than you do — and the distance that's opened up feels harder to name than a simple disagreement. So many parents are navigating this same quiet heartbreak, often in isolation, unsure who they can even talk to about it. This gathering is a space to sit with others who understand: parents whose children have grown into people with different values, different politics, different ideas about family and boundaries than the ones they were raised with. We'll talk honestly about what it means when love remains but connection feels harder to reach, and we'll explore what it might look like to build a new kind of relationship with your child—one that doesn't require either of you to become someone you're not. The conversation is facilitated by therapist Julie Kittredge who is both an adult child of a work-in-progress parent/adult relationship and has three young adult children of her own. You'll leave feeling less alone, and with real ways to start reconnecting.

Things we may explore include:

  • How we are different from our adult kids, and why that’s okay.

  • Layers of grief that isn’t your fault or theirs.

  • Letting go of expectations for the purpose of preserving the relationship.

  • Inviting curiosity over correction and acceptance over judgement.

  • Allowing agency, choice, and a personal journey. Being present without offering direction.

  • Considering the path of repair if that is needed.
