In the past few decades, the amount of people leaving spiritual homes (churches) in America has increased significantly. This is true across all demographics (sex, race, socioeconomic status, etc.) and denominations. After COVID hit over five years ago, even more people found themselves dislodged and dislocated from previous places of belonging and connection.
Many of these people have left their faith beliefs and background all together, but the vast majority have not. The spiritually homeless are those that identify on some level with a core faith identity, but often find themselves struggling to relate with previous spiritual spaces of connection and belonging. Some carry wounds from these past spiritual homes which have never been heard or healed (church hurt). Many find themselves isolated and exhausted from attempts to reconnect that seem to fall on deaf ears. Nearly all carry a hunger for deeper connection and belonging in newly found highly relational communities.
At The Art of Becoming Collective, part of our vision is to be that kind of relational community. Our Open Houses are designed to bring people from all backgrounds into a space that honors the story of each individual, and seeks to imagine what can be created from the Collective “we”.
In this Open House time, we will:
Address the recent history of an increased movement away from spiritual homes towards the wilderness (spiritual homelessness)
Explore the common themes leading people to choose spiritual homelessness over an obligation to the church
Name the hardships that comes with spiritual homelessness
Offer a space for deeper connection and soul care that many are longing for
Imagine why spiritual homes are important and what makes a spiritual home healthy
All are welcome - from the spiritually homeless to the home-filled, and everywhere in between (and outside). We have much to learn from each other.
